Brief:
Research and create a packaging to educate someone and give a deeper understanding about a cultural background.
Concept:
A mask is an ancient form of an expressive facial disguise. It is a symbol of the concealment of the ego behind an artificial mask. Legend says that the Italian festival, Carnevale, is said to be where the tradition of the mask was born. Thousands of participants roam through the areas of Italy wearing masks creating the possibilities for the wearers to turn into whoever they want to be while in costume. When coming up with this concept for La Obscure I was looking to target an audience that appealed to both kids and adults who wanted to learn more about the the Italian festival of Carnevale in a fun and playful manner. When designing the masks, sticking to the theme of Italian mythology I thought was an interesting idea because of what the deities symbolized and what playful characteristics could be displayed and represented.
The three masks displayed are inspired by Anteros (God of love and passion), Jove (God of the heavens and the sky), and Nox (Goddess of the night).
